Some designers start with a sketch. others, by draping on a form. For Canadian Jeremy Laing, however, the process kicks off with a little origami handiwork. "I work out how to achieve a shape by cutting and folding paper," Laing says. It explains the rather clean and architectural ethos behind his three-year-old line - and belies those formative years spent in Alexander McQueen's studio constructing high-drama runway showpieces. As Laing describes it, his collection is about the "appearance of simplicity that hides a complexity." But for all that apparent intellectualism, his fall collection is partly inspired by artist Josef Albers and kaleidoscopic symmetry - his clothes are easy, no-fuss wares. Prime examples: a billowy tank dress and a simple sheath with rivet details.

Alexander McQueen Fall 2009 Finale Soundtrack: "Ben" by Michael Jackson

"Ben" is a number-one hit song recorded by the teenaged Michael Jackson for the Motown label in 1972. The song, the theme of a 1972 film of the same name (the sequel to the 1971 killer rat movie Willard), spent one week at the top of the U.S. pop chart.



The song was originally written for Donny Osmond, but he was on tour and unavailable when it was time to record the single, so the song was offered to Michael Jackson.

The band Pearl Jam makes a reference to the song "Ben" on their 1993 album Vs. on the song "Rats", with the line "Ben, the two of us need look no more" repeated several times at the end the track.

The song was covered in 2003 by Crispin Glover, for the remake of the prequel to the film Ben, Willard.

Sydney Pollack, director of movies such as "The Swimmer", "They Shoot Horses Don't They?" and "Three Days of the Condor", died Monday afternoon. He was remembered not only for his Academy Award-winning direction, but also for his acting talents. He played Victor Ziegler in Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut".
In "They shoot Horses, Don't They?", Jane Fonda plays a suicidal failed actress who enters a Depression-era dance marathon where the last couple standing wins. This film predicted the tragedy of reality tv, where has-beens' & never-was' put their health & dignity at risk for money and fame. It also inspired Steven Meisel's March 1997 Italian Vogue editorial and Alexander McQueen's Spring 2004 fashion show.
