Two seasons ago Jamie Bochert caused a frisson of excitement when she opened the Marc Jacobs show: who was that girl?

The New Jersey native had retired from modelling three years previously to concentrate on making music. Heads turned and the Gothic beauty was snapped up for campaigns with Lanvin, Gucci and Marc Jacobs, walking for Ann Demeulemeester, Balenciaga, Celine and Narciso Rodriguez’s autumn/winter 11 shows. Back in 2003, when Jamie first left modelling, a scruffy guy with dyed jet black hair ordered a beer at the bar where she was working. “Fuck bartending,” the guy told her, “you should concentrate on your music.” The two began dating and moved in together. That Christmas Jamie’s new beau surprised her by buying her a piano. “I’d just met Jamie and I didn’t tell her what I did for a living,” says Jamie’s boyfriend, the actor Michael Pitt, over the phone from the couple’s Brooklyn apartment. “She had no clue. Then all of a sudden she saw me dubbing lines in Last Days (Gus Van Sant's tribute to Kurt Cobain). In the scene I was wearing a dress and had blonde hair, she was quite surprised!” When she’s not busy modelling, 32 year old Jamie spends her time writing songs with the view to entering the studio soon with Michael to record them. They are yet to secure a record deal but the buzz surrounding the couple is already strong. Going under the musical moniker of Frances Wolf, Bochert’s songs possess a dark, haunted romance that builds to an emotive crescendo before falling away to an eerie lullaby...

It is hard to tear a stylish crowd away from shows in the middle of Paris fashion week, but if anyone can grab their attention it is Jamie Bochert. Saturday night at Le Carmen, Bochert and boyfriend Michael Pitt staged an intimate performance of their band, Francis Wolf. With Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Isabeli Fontana, Viktor & Rolf, Natasha Poly and many more in the audience, the duo rocked out with a series of haunting songs complete with a string section and video installation. Not exactly dance music, as Bouchert, quipped during the playful performance, but certainly mesmerizing and soulful tunes that kept the audience enthralled all through the night up to the intense Michael Pitt guitar and amplifier smashing finale.

Wayne Sterling: How common is it for mainstream magazines to find the images in an editorial too strong?

Steven Klein: 'I FIND MOST MAGAZINE EDITORIALS WEAK IN COMPARISON TO THE VISUAL FIELD OF CINEMA AND ART.'

WS: Do you think today's audience wants pushed images or do they want to sit in a comfort zone given the recession fears of today?

SK:'PEOPLE CRAVE TO SEE IMAGES THAT WILL COMPEL THEM OUT OF THEIR BOREDOM.'

WS: Do you think your images lose something when they're seen on the Internet as opposed to print?

SK: 'I AM FINDING MANY IMAGES TO BE STRONGER ON THE INTERNET. IN FACT WHEN THE NY POST PUBLISHES AN IMAGE FROM MY SHOOT OR I SEE MY EDITORIAL FEATURED ON A BLOG AND MIXED IN WITH ITS GRAPHICS AND TEXT, THE IMAGES TAKE ON A NEW LIFE, NOT SO PRECIOUS BUT VITAL.'

WS: What do you see as the future of print magazines and lavish fashion editorials?

SK: 'THEY NEED TO CATCH UP TO THE MODERN LOOK OF MANY OF THE BLOGS I SEE.'

WS: Your images are certainly cinematic. Do you think we'll be watching fashion ads+ editorials that are mini- videos or mini-films in the near future?

SK: 'I AM ALREADY CREATING MINI FILMS ON MY WEBSITE THAT ARE DERIVED FROM MY SHOOTS,'

Your Skin Against My Skin, starring Michael Pitt, directed by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin

In celebration of Creative Director Stefano Pilati’s AW 09-10 Homme collection for Yves Saint Laurent, the iconic French fashion house has released a short film created by photographers Inez can Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.

The film stars actor and musician Michael Pitt who is best known for his roles in films such as Last Days, Bully and Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

The film, shot in black and white, pays homage to the Yves Saint Laurent AW collection in a tender exchange between Pitt and an unseen woman. The frame is filled with Pitt’s face, and focuses on his reactions to the softly spoken words of the invisible woman. She speaks lovingly about clothing as Pitt looks on in silent reverence at a spectacle that is entirely hidden from the audience. The physical absence of this enigmatic woman causes the imagination to run wild, as it is easy to imagine her behind the lens, slowly undressing herself to the speechless wonder of Pitt.

The cameraman for Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin's film, Your Skin Against My Skin, was Harris Savides, who usually works with Gus Van Sant.



Your Skin Against My Skin reminds me of a short film directed by Andy Warhol. Filmed in January 1964, the 35-minute film was shot with a 16-millimetre Bolex silent camera on black-and-white film. It depicts the face of an anonymous young man (DeVeren Bookwalter) as he receives relations from an off-screen partner, widely reported to be avant-garde filmmaker Willard Maas.

While shot at 24 fps, Warhol specified that it should be projected at 16 fps, slowing it down by a third.

Despite the explicit subject matter, the camera shows only the expression on the young man's face. The act itself is not seen. It is unknown whether it is a male or a female performing the act, and it is unseen, therefore the viewer must simply take it at face value that relations are indeed occurring.
