As nice as it was here in New York, plenty of fashion folks with children (David Neville and Gucci Westman, Jenna Lyons, and host Mary Alice Stephenson) spent Saturday afternoon inside at Milk Gallery at a fundraiser held by Planet Awesome Kid. The Web site is one part The Sartorialist for the under-12 set and another part party planner, and the beneficiary of the event was Global Action for Children, a charity whose honorary chair is Angelina Jolie. She and Brad weren’t in attendance, but there were models (like Dorothea Barth Jorgensen, pictured) and A-listers (Brooke Shields included) for moms and dads to ogle, while the kids watched break dancing by Kid Flash and Full Circle Soul, painted alongside the world-famous graffiti artist Aero, or got spotted for a fashion campaign. No word on whether it was coincidence or kismet that a KCD employee casting tots for a Benetton ad took a break from work upstairs to check out the party.

In an abrupt shift from last season's dreamy seventies-inflected stenciled ponchos and shredded suede and point d'esprit apron dresses, Joseph Altuzarra sent out a fierce and fearless collection of structured tailoring, commanding outerwear, and seriously sexy dresses. Ironically, some designers have been moving in the opposite direction lately, and yet Altuzarra's counterintuitive move was completely convincing. Backstage he explained he wanted to explore the dichotomies between strength and fragility, modern reality and fairy tales. At the outset, it was hard to see where the fragility came in, so potent and imposing was the first model out in her jacket pieced together, in the au courant manner, from nubby wool, leather, and goat fur. A second glance, however, revealed that the seams at the back of the blazer's arms were stitched roughly, like sutures.

The Edward Scissorhands motif continued throughout: Sometimes the stitches were taut, revealing just a flash of skin between the curving seams of a pair of narrow pants; other times, Altuzarra took a looser approach, as when knitting together the splices in a stretchy hourglass dress. Even the boots were slashed to reveal the ankle. Belts and buckles, meanwhile, provided another suggestive element. There were shades of S&M in a pencil skirt with straps holding its hip-high slits together. The blood red evening dresses flashing décolletage and thigh weren't for the faint of heart, either.This was just Altuzarra's third collection, but the confidence of his technique and vision would suggest that his newcomer days are over.

Narciso Rodriguez Pre Fall 2010 Show

Narciso Rodriguez's lineup opened with a red double-face cashmere wool balloon coat and tapering trousers. "Early fall is about menswear, the boys' club," the designer said. "But the silhouettes are exaggerated." In both directions: The next look was a washed heavyweight winter cotton pantsuit, the shrunken jacket of which had toylike proportions. On the relaxed side, he showed a cap-sleeve sack dress in a metallic-shot wool with slash pockets at the hips, and an easy gray flannel jumpsuit with matching grosgrain trim. Stretch knit sleeveless tops and skirts, meanwhile, and his asymmetric-neckline cocktail fare, including one knockout L.B.D. with a bodice embroidered with blackened red sequins, followed much more body-con lines. Never for a moment did any of these experiments with volume, or the lack thereof, look like anything but signature Rodriguez, and that should certainly please his sophisticated power-women clients. -

Narciso Rodriguez Pre Fall 2009 Collection - Ana Mihajlovic

Narciso Rodriguez may be coming off a major coup—Michelle Obama wore a dress from his Spring show to her husband's election night rally, in case you were hiding under a ballot machine—but there's been no slowing down.

"This is our most polished pre-collection ever," Rodriguez said. "It has to be; we do so much more business now during the pre-seasons."

Perhaps taking a cue from Obama's red and black embroidered dress, the designer infused pre-fall with plenty of brilliant colors—fuchsia, ruby, deep purple, and inky blue. He also continued to play with the banding motifs that made his last collection so sexy. It wasn't all provocation, though.

There was an ice gray shift dress that the designer himself decreed "very presidential."
