Eye Magazine Covers

Eye Magazine was published by the Hearst Corporation (Harper's Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping) to cover the emerging youth explosion of the 1960's. It was marketed to college students (male & female) covering fashion, music, and politics.

Most issues came with a bonus item inserted for the reader (Posters, record, comic book). The last three issues had no insert. There were only 15 issues published between March 1968 and May 1969.

1968 & 1969 were wild times of women's liberation, gay liberation and civil rights. Those years also coincided with the Vietnam War.

Currently, America is going through another foreign war in Iraq. Most fashion magazines, even the ones that target the college/youth market, ignore current events and focus on celebrity culture, specifically to promote upcoming films & television programs.

Magazines today never come with bonus items for readers, and on the rare times they do cover current events, the coverage is usually filtered through rose colored glasses.

Harper's Bazaar wrote an article about former First Lady Laura Bush in their October 2008 issue, praising her as being
open, quick, thoughtful, and funny
as well as being
a powerful presence on the world stage
and looking
cool and elegant in an Escada tweed jacket and black slacks.
(Other favorites include Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera.)

I'm not sure what Eye Magazine would make of Laura Bush. Although it did feature an article titled: Grace Slick, Peter Fonda, Julie Nixon and Frank Zappa Tell What Turns Them On.

I'm not sure what turned on Julie Nixon in 1968, but 40 years later, despite her and her husband's and father's Republican background and relationships to presidents Richard Nixon and Dwight D. Eisenhower, Julie supported Democrat Barack Obama for President in 2008. According to Federal Election Commission records, Eisenhower made the maximum contribution of $2,300 to the Obama campaign during the 2008 primary season.

I am optimistic that new faces and new voices in magazines will emerge from the current recession. LOVE Magazine launches on February 19th, and I for one cannot wait!
